A cup of hot tea has taken on a whole new meaning for me after listening to my daughter talk enthusiastically yesterday about the sermon she heard. I didn’t make it out to church yesterday because of the snow that blanketed the Washington area over the weekend. So my daughter’s over the phone recitation of the sermon she heard at a church in her college town became my sermon for the day.

While giving his sermon, the pastor there asked a church nurse to bring him a tea bag. He said he was sure there was a woman in the audience who had a spare tea bag in her purse. Sure enough someone had the tea bag he needed for his illustration. Pastor Troy took the tea bag and dipped it a couple times in a cup of lukewarm water.

You can’t just dip the tea bag once in the water for a good cup of tea. Or twice. You have to let the bag rest in the water, he said. The more it rests, the more the water takes on the essence of the tea bag.

Same goes for your soul, the pastor explained. The water represented the soul; the tea bag the Word of God, he said.

You cannot just dip into the Word of God once or twice a week or go to church infrequently. At some point, you have to steep yourself in the Scriptures for it to make a difference in your life, for the essence of the Word to become real to you.

“If a tea bag can do that to water, think about what the word of God can do to your soul.”

                                                                        —Pastor Troy

Think about it the next time you sit to savor a good cup of tea.
