Spring cleaning for house and soul

A friend and I were talking about doing some house cleaning. Busy schedules had pushed some things off the must-do list that we both now recognize must be taken care of. For me, it’s my office where papers are once again taking over my desk and books are stacked everywhere. After a while, it’s hard for thoughts to flow freely when surrounded by clutter.

It’s the same thing on the spiritual side, my friend and I agreed as we chatted over the phone Monday. We both had attended a College of Prayer-Washington, D.C. module over the weekend about teaching families to pray. One of the first sessions was called “Cleaning out the House (so the blessing can flow!)

Presenter Susan Bliss said that each of us have a God-sized hole that only God can fill and yet many of us try to fill them with other things, including a distorted view of who God is. In order for us to clean house, said Susan said, we have to recognize who God is. We also have to reject and renounce any agreement we have made with ourselves, the enemy or anyone else that goes against the truth of who God is. Susan, who was teaching along with her husband Bruce and daughter Jennifer, pointed out several things that we allow to muddle our spiritual lives:

    false religions

    sexual sin

(Please share other Scriptures that you have read that have helped you deal with any of these areas?)

When we sin, Susan explained, we become filled with condemnation, shame, panic/rage, blame, and we live in bondage. That’s a lot of stuff, and it creates darkness and diminishes the light for us to live and walk in.

It’s time to clean out the house. Proverbs 24:3 tells us: “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.”

As I look at what is happening in the world, especially at how swiftly hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, violent storms are taking lives and demolishing homes, I recognize that I need to do some spiritual house cleaning. Some stuff that has been taking up room in my life has to go. Reoccurring guilt, fear, covetousness, doubt have to go. I need to free up space for more of the light of God to shine through me.

I struggled while trying to write this blog since Monday. I had too many thoughts running through my mind. I am excited about what I had learned over the weekend and at the same time a little weary about seeing some of the same dirty dust-balls cropping up in my faith walk. I went to sleep with a prayer on my heart and woke of this morning with Psalm 51: 10 ringing within me.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

As I read the entire chapter this morning, I knew I had to spend time today meditating on it as I do some spiritual house cleaning. I invite you to do the same.

Today, I’ll also begin returning order to my office so that don’t have to stop and look through every pile when I need something and so that God’s creative grace can move unreservedly through me.
