Believing in the power of prayer

I  know there is power in prayer. I have experienced first-hand answers to some of my prayers, and I have witnessed what happens when God has responded to the petitions of others. So when I came across this quote in my reading of E.M. Bounds, I knew it as worth sharing.

Today I’ve been praying for the recovery Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who is clinging to life after a gunman shattered the sanity of a routine political event last Saturday in Tucson. Six people, including a 9-year-old girl who  is being called “a face of hope,” died and 14 others were wounded during the explosion of violence in a shopping center parking lot.

I am praying for the end to the violent start to killings in neighboring Prince George’s County, which has seen 11 murders in as many days.

I am praying also for the hope that comes with the start of each New Year, each new day and for God’s grace and mercies to continue to cover this nation. I believe in the power of prayer and I ask that those of you who believe also to pray for a decrease in violence in your communities, our nation and the world. Our hope does not have to be in vain.

“The potency of prayer has subdued the strength of fire; it has bridled the rage of lions, hushed anarchy to rest, extinguished wars, appeased the elements, expelled demons, burst the chains of death, expanded the gates of heaven, assuaged diseases, repelled frauds, rescued cities from destruction, stayed the sun in its course, and arrested the progress if the thunderbolt. Prayer is an off-efficient panoply, a treasure undiminished, a mine that is never exhausted, a sky unobscured by clouds, a heaven unruffled by the storm. It is the root, the fountains, the mother of a thousand blessings.   –St. Chrysostom

    1. Dear Sister Yvonne…what a beautiful reminder of the importance of prayer! Prayer is the Open Door to God’s Throne. Just as when we desire to enter into the Throne Room for a request, we know that Prayer is our Open invitation to come directly into the Presence of our King!

Years ago I had read EM Bounds..and upon your mentioning him several posts back, I have begun to read him, and also have started several friends to reading The Power Through Prayer. Thank you for the reminder!

I love quote by St. Chrysostom!
