What if God recalled some of us?

The recall today of 1.2 million Graco high chairs  for a loose screw that could cause them to tip over got me thinking. The number and variety of items that have been recalled in recent months is astounding.  We’ve seen cribs with defective drop sides and strollers with hinges that cut children.

Toyota is the latest automobile manufacturer to finds itself recalling record numbers of its vehicles. That’s a major slap in the face for an organization that has a solid reputation for building a top quality product. But they are not alone.

Over the years, numerous products have been pulled from shelves, from homes, from streets because they have posed a threat. Among them have been children’s toys and jewelry made in China laced with lead paint; contaminated foods, such as meats, cantaloupes, peanut butter, tomatoes and lettuces; and beauty products, exercise equipment and fireworks.

The list is long and, unfortunately, growing. But the rising number of product recalls is not the point of this blog. It just triggered this thought.

What if God put me –or you—on a divine recall list for believers with spiritual defects? Which of these, if any, would apply to you? What are some others?

  • A mind that conjures up more evil deeds and thoughts than good.
  • Eyes that see the worst in people and situations rather than finding the best.
  • Ears that listen more to gossip than to what is true and honest.
  • Arms that hold people down rather than lift them up.
  • Hands that reach out in greed and selfishness rather than in grace and selflessness.
  • A stomach that seeks to fill itself with no thought of the hunger others are suffering
  • Feet that run toward conflict rather than walk covered with the gospel of peace.
  • A heart that harbors hard feelings rather than one that feels the hardships of others and loves unconditionally.

Sometimes I  have to stop and ask myself am I traveling at breakneck speed, doing  the right things for the wrong reasons? Is there a screw loose in my church life that has caused me to suffer spiritual weakness  in some areas? Have I been contaminated by success or the thirst for prosperity and forgotten what God created me for?

The singing group Casting Crowns has a song that I love that says in part:

“But if we are the body

Why aren’t His arms reaching?

Why aren’t His hands healing?

Why aren’t His words teaching?

And if we are the body

Why aren’t His feet going?

Why is His love not showing them there is a way?

There is a way

…Jesus is the way”

It’s just a thought.  But I know I must act on it.
