Love is everything
As Valentine Day approaches, here’s a little something to consider. One day does not define how much we are loved or not loved. I learned that lesson when I was single and without a significant other and the day passed without a single card, and it has been reinforced since I’ve been married and once was given a hastily purchased plant (not even roses) from a supermarket. I accepted it with a smile, I would like to think.
The notion of Valentines Day is great. Chocolates, flowers or cards, diamonds even, are wonderful gifts to give or receive on Sunday. But true love doesn’t come in a box or on a stem, it lives in the heart and it is acted out everyday. If we love ourselves and believe that God loves us, rather than looking to receive a Valentine, we could happily give love to someone else. Much like we did when we were kids, pass along a card to someone this Sunday and maybe even some of that heart-shaped candy that says “Be Mine.” Let it be a sign of God’s divine love that beckons us to Him.
Here is where I am going with this. These words sum up well what we all should consider on Valentines Day, and if we do, no one would feel left out or be disappointed with their gift. If we could all love in this way, then every day will be Valentine Day.
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails….And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a and 13
