Appreciating a president who relies on faith, prayer
I don’t know about you but I am glad to hear that I have a president who believes in faith and the power of prayer, even if he doesn’t wear it on his sleeves. Given all that he is faced with –wars, budget deficits, the economic crisis, high unemployment, you name it – President Obama is well served by being in frequent communication with God. So is the country.
Last month, the president confessed as much when he spoke at the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He talked about how frustrating his job can be, saying “There are times when it feels like all these efforts are for naught, and change is so painfully slow in coming, and I have to confront my own doubts.
“But let me tell you — during those times it’s faith that keeps me calm. It’s faith that gives me peace.”
On the eve of his appearance today at the National Prayer Breakfast, The Washington Post reported that while President Obama’s spiritual life is largely private, those who know him say he depends on his faith. Among other things, every morning he receives a daily devotional message on his Blackberry from his director of the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He also can often be seen in prayerful thought in his office. The Post story offers some insight into our president’s faith practices and is worth the read.
At the prayer breakfast, the president, who is seen in this AP photo, called for civility in politics and told his distractors they could question his policies without questioing his faith.
Already some pundits and critics are dissecting what he said–or didn’t say– about his faith. What do you say?
