Happy and thankful

First let me say, Happy Thanksgiving! This is one of my all-time favorite holidays. As a youngster, I loved it when all of us would gather for the day. The house brimmed with laughter and chatter as the final touches were being put on dinner. The meal always blessed me, not just my stomach but also deep in my soul.

My mother stayed up half the night preparing the feast for us. She usually baked her turkey in the late hours of the night, filling the house with the aroma of anticipation that greeted me when  I stumbled out of bed.  One of my  jobs was dicing the onions, bell peppers and celery for the cornbread dressing she made.  I still feel that my stuffing is not complete without them. I’ve never quite mastered cooking collard greens like she did, probably because I don’t cook with pork or more likely because she just knew how to make collards sing with favor. I don’t cook collards very often, though I do love a good serving of well-seasoned greens.

My father, three brothers and two sisters were the ready recipients of the love my mother poured into our Thanksgiving meals. Sometimes other relatives would come, spilling from our small living room into the den and dining room.  Sometimes we would go to Vidalia, Ga. ( the home of the Vidalia onion) to celebrate with my grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles.  I didn”t even mind sitting at the little children’s table, ’cause I knew I was getting the same food everybody else was getting and it was going to be GOOD!  My mouth is salivating now just thinking about the Red Velvet, German Chocolate and pound cakes and the pies that lined the dessert table. Noisy, love-filled Thanksgiving days shared with lots of friends and relatives are the best.

I am thankful for such memories.

Today, I’m making new memories at my brother’s house. His wife and daughters have been busy preparing more food than we will ever eat in one setting, including the best mac and cheese this side of  Heaven. My sisters are here. Margaret brought a Sour Cream Cake. I made pies – pecan and peach. My husband Greg made sweet potato pies. We’re going to eat until our stomachs hurt and laugh until our heats overflow.

And then play Scrabble.

God Bless Thanksgiving Day.
