Waiting with prayer and faith

One of the things that I have come to know about prayer is this: Answers to prayer don’t always come when or how you want them to come. As the seasoned missionaries in my childhood church used to testify: “Wait on the Lord.”

The Bible goes further when it urges us to “Wait on the Lord and be of good courage” and even “of good cheer.”  That’s hard sometimes.

waiting for God

All around me, I see people waiting for answers to their prayers. I have close friends who need physical healings now and some who are in search of emotional stability.  A relative is hanging on to hope as he waits to see how a critical issue in his life will be resolved. People I know are wondering why their pleadings for financial breakthroughs in this tough economy have not been answered.

Waiting on God requires more than patience; it requires trust. That’s one of the lessons I’ve learned and am still learning. I am trying to relinquish my need for control and for prescribing how and when I want God to answer my prayers. God’s grace surely covered me during my God-as-genie-in-a-bottle period.

For the last year, I have been praying and waiting on God to intervene in a specific situation. Early in the process, I decided to trust God with the outcome. While the situation has not changed yet, I have and so has my relationship with Him. I read and studied the Scriptures. Prayed some more and listened more for His direction.

An inner peace is a byproduct of trusting God to do what He wants to do in me as I wait for the answer. I have experienced instances where physical healing and material provision have not come, but spiritual growth has. I worry much less now than I ever did.

Waiting on God is an act of faith, and as the wall hanging I saw in my sister-in-law’s house yesterday says, “Faith makes things possible, not easy.”

Are you waiting on God for an answer to a long-ago prayer? Don’t give up. You may be surprised what God does in you and through you while you wait.

  1. This helped me out soooo much. Thank you for sharing your faith. I’m waiting to start my post-grad degree and was afraid I wouldn’t find the money to go…..even though I postponed it last year….I’m still praying for God to intervene and find a way for me….God has really always found a solution I was eventually happy with so I shouldn’t worry, I have faith.

I feel like crying…..I think I just got a supersized order of miracle delivered to me…..He works so fast it’s amazing. As soon as I stopped worrying and stressing (for about 9 months now…)…and just last night I told Him to take the reigns with my situation it was like an automatic response….less than 24 hrs later my prayers are being answered. Praise him! wow wow wow wow! THIS IS TRULY INCREDIBLE. I am almost overwhelmed.
